SUNDAY MAY 24, 2015 NAMPA IDAHO 314 miles
We found a 9 AM church service, so drove over to Community United Methodist Church about 10 miles from us. It was fairly sunny, tho still chilly— about 50. On the way there, we noticed a gas station that actually had diesel fuel less than regular!!!! (Was not the case on the highway later on.) It was a small church sanctuary, but was pretty full— maybe 150 people. Their 11 am service is praise and worship, and they actually have Sunday school for kids during the 9AM service, so there were no children there except an acolyte. They had a choir of 12 men and 12 women — most were old, but a few younger folks—they sounded pretty good, and really sang out. (There was a man who really sang with gusto and he looked just like Don Thorp.) They passed a mike for prayer requests, and a lot of people asked for prayers— a good 10 minutes worth — it was sort of nice since it is such a small sanctuary. The choir sang God of Our Fathers (accompanist used a keyboard— did not sound as nice as a piano). Since it was their last Sunday to sing in service, they sang another selection “Swingin with the Saints” — it was a very jazzed arrangement. It started with Swing Low Sweet Chariot and ended with When the Saints Go Marching In— they used canned music for accompaniment. At first I thought this might be something our church choir would like, but it was pretty difficult, and it needs a lot of strong tenors and basses. It was Pentecost Sunday, so most people wore red. The minister Gary Haddock was fairly young— late 40’s, early 50’s. He preached a good sermon on Pentecost, using visual aids. When we shook his hand coming out of church, Larry had to look up to him— he must have been about 6’7”!
We drove back to the RV to change clothes and take off. We got the car all hooked up, and when Larry got to the corner of a row where he needed to turn, there was a fairly deep dip and he could hear a scraping noise. So, we disconnected the car, and he backed all the way down the row where he could get out easier. A bearded man was watching with amusement— said he has seen RV’s with tow cars who have broken the tow bar at that dip! Anyhow, we got reattached — was starting to rain again a little.
We drove north past the Great Salt Lake, and got into Idaho. Northern Utah and Southern Idaho are very pretty— lots of hills, very green from all the recent rain. We could see rain clouds touching the ground all around us and eventually, we drove thru the rain. The farther north we drove, the warmer it got(!).
We got to Nampa around 4:15 and felt warm for the first time this trip. Right now at 8:10 pm, it is 76 degrees! We got one of the last few spots in the park — Garrity RV Park — we didn’t get our Passport America Discount because they fill up after May 15 and don’t need to offer it— still pretty cheap, like $24. When we unhooked the car at the RV spot, the battery was dead! We have a gizmo that is a brake for the car that automatically stops the car if the car ever detached from the RV— it apparently sucked all the juice out of the battery. A man a few RV’s down, came over and gave us a jump. After eating dinner, we drove around— not much to see in Nampa. We have a friend (Lori Round) who grew up here and attended Northwest Nazarene University — so we found that— looked like a nice campus —not sure how it looks midwinter!
So not an exciting day. Photos are boring— getting gas at a truck stop, the RV park, a cute statue we saw along the street in Ogden. Tomorrow we will drive to northern Oregon or Southern Washington. We plan to get to Seattle on Tuesday.
